3 things to know about Aizu

Snow, Sake, Samurai Holiday In Aizu

A remarkable natural world of mountains, forests and sparkling lakes, less than two hours by train from the heart of Tokyo. It starts with great, light snow falling across the dense forest, and its accessibility to so many other ski areas. There is a rich “samurai” cultural heritage, delicious local food and sake, and lots to do throughout the year. This is Aizu, famous in Japan but still a hidden treasure for the rest of the world. Here is a wealth of great places to stay, ski, and enjoy the natural beauty unhurriedly. It’s still a secret, but now you know the name: Aizu.

Untouched powder anytime

Mt. Bandai is a symbol not only of the Aizu area, but of all of Fukushima Prefecture. Its appearance shifts dramatically depending on the direction from which you’re viewing it: on one side, a smooth cone like Mt. Fuji, on the other hand, a rough crater dating back to an explosive volcanic eruption in 1888. Exploring the geography of Mt. Bandai, which has two faces, the North of Mt.Bandai is known for its ultra-light powder snow running through a deep beech forest. On the other hand, the South face has huge-scale terrain with sunshine and easy access to a variety of ski resorts, all covering large areas of land. Skiing in Aizu means you have more options to enjoy, from deep powder to nice skiing with your family.

Where the samurai spirit lingers: Aizu

Feel the flow of time. Tsurugajo Castle is the symbol of Aizu, a famous structure that survived the fierce civil war that broke out just as Japan was modernising, and remains one of Japan’s representative castles. Aizu has grown and prospered around the castle, while a sense of the deep history that has happened here can be found throughout the city.
